Zachary Levi is taking another step into the DC universe with March’s second “Shazam!” movie, but the actor built a solid career long before he took on his first superhero role. Levi made her television debut in “Big Shot: Confessions of a Campus Bookie”, a made-for-television movie in 2002, after playing a small role in sitcoms in the early 2000s (Anyone Else? (Remember the charming Less Than Perfect?) He landed his breakthrough role: spy Chuck Bartowski, incidentally, in the NBC spy comedy “Chuck” for five seasons from 2007 to 2012. Levi’s Play as Chuck A nerd in a tech store accidentally uploads a CIA supercomputer into his brain. This series made Levi a geek icon. Especially when it became the focus of one of the earliest successful “save our show” campaigns.
During his cast on “Chuck,” Levi got another big break. He voiced Flynn Rider opposite Mandy Moore’s Rapunzel in Disney’s 2010 animated classic Tangled. where he and Moore sing “I See the Light”, the film’s theme song. when it turns out Levi’s vocals are Broadway-level. “First Date” was his Broadway debut in 2013, and in 2016 he starred as Georg Nowack in a revival of “She Loves Me.” which was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
After “Chuck” ended, Levi still wasn’t out of the nerd forest when Josh Dallas was unable to return as Fandral in the “Thor” sequel due to his commitment to the nerd. Once Upon a Time, Levi was tapped to replace him as Thor’s dashing friend for 2013’s “Thor: The Dark World” and 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok.” He also starred in a reboot of NBC’s “Heroes: Reborn” in 2015, and in 2019 he starred in DC’s first “Shazam!” movie.
