Advance Australia Fair was chosen as the de facto national anthem in a 1977 plebiscite by just over 8.4 million voters who chose the song over God Save the Queen, Waltzing Matilda and Song of Australia.

It was officially adopted as the national anthem on April 19, 1984 at the recommendation of the federal government.

The song was composed by Scottish-born Peter Dodds McCormick, first performed in 1878 and sung in Australia as a patriotic song.

CURRENT TEXT:

All Australians let us enjoy

Because we are one and for free

We have golden soil and wealth to work with

Our home is surrounded by the sea

Our earth abounds with gifts of nature

Of beauty, rich and rare

In the story page let each stage

Advance Australia fair

In joyful strains then let us sing

Advance Australia fair

Beneath our radiant Southern Cross

We will work with hearts and hands

To make this community ours

Known by all lands

For those beyond the seas

We have endless planes to share

With courage let us all unite

To advance a fair Australia

In joyful strains then let us sing

Advance Australia fair

RECOGNITION IN THE SECOND AND THIRD VERSE SENTENCES OF THE HYMN:

Verse 2 – Our people

For sixty thousand years and more

The first people on this earth

It’s supported by the country, Dreaming said

With a song and the hand of the artist.

Unite our cultures from afar

In peace with the first here

Let’s walk together on this ground

Respect for everyone grows there.

From every corner of the Earth we sing, Advance Australia Fair.

Verse 3 – Our Values

During drought, flood and fire

When all but hope is gone

Australians join in with a helping hand

And the hedge blossoms again.

Tomorrow may this eternal earth

Live to share our young

From a red rock heart to a sun-filled shore

Our country is free and just.

Beneath the Southern Cross we sing, Advance Australia Fair.

Beneath the Southern Cross we sing, Advance Australia Fair.
