The Swiss tennis legend revealed earlier this month that the London tournament would be the last competition of his career after battling a series of injuries in recent years.
And when he took to the court on Friday, where he will partner Spain’s Rafael Nadal, he was greeted with a chorus of cheers from fans in the crowd.

For the final match of his 24-year career, Federer played alongside his long-time competitor for Team Europe against the American duo of Jack Sock and Francis Tiafoe.
The 41-year-old looked relaxed backstage as he chatted with team captain Björn Borg and team-mates Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berettini before taking to the court.
Federer had already spoken of his desire to play alongside Nadal before Team Europe captain Borg helped the tennis legend fulfill his wish.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion – who is third on the men’s all-time list – is revered as one of the greatest to ever grace the court, winning a staggering 103 ATP Tour singles titles in total.
The Laver Cup, which Federer helped establish in 2017, sees Team Europe take on Team World in tennis’ version of golf’s Ryder Cup, with nine singles matches and three doubles matches at London’s O2 Arena.
