(Warning: The following contains MAJOR spoilers for 1923 (Season 1, Episode 8 finale “Nothing’s Left to Loose”)
Spencer and Alex are closer to the state of Montana than they’ve been all seasons in. 1923 The finale, but as the Season 1 finale revealed, they were nowhere near their final destination.
Season 1, Episode 8 Brings Yellowstone The prequel’s premiere season wraps up on Sunday, February 26 on Paramount+. But there is certainly no happy ending.

Suffice it to say that the return of Spencer (Brandon Skelnar) was needed more than ever. It takes him and Alex (Julia Schlepfer) a three-week cruise to reach a U.S. port in the finale, but Alex’s past is shattered when his ex-fiancé, Arthur (Ralph Zul). ) and the family ended up in the same boat. Sklenar told TV Insider before the finale that the British royal family (the Earl of Sussex we learn now) would make “he didn’t like Spencer,” and oh, he did.
Little Arthur challenges Spencer to a duel after a tense ballroom brawl. Spencer reminds him that he kills for a living. So he didn’t lose. But it was clear that he didn’t want to fight. He has no choice after Arthur publicly insults Alex. and on the deck of the ship The Earl made his nasty nature even more apparent when breaking the rules of the duel and drawing a revolver on Spencer, who had turned unarmed. Spencer throws him overboard. Arthur survives, but his father (aka Arthur, played by Bruce Davison) wants Spencer arrested. And Alex locks her in her room.
Alex’s friend helped her escape imprisonment. But she didn’t have much time to jump into a dirty pit to bring the handcuffed Spencer ashore. They shouted, “I love you!” Alex said she would meet him in Montana. And their final scene ends with the newlyweds separated in heartbreak.
Here, Sklenar breaks down the emotional endings for TV Insider, explaining how these heartbreaking endings create “an emotional ending.” How was the “big change in tone” for season 2?
I can’t believe they are separated! What was your reaction when you first read the finale of those ships?
Brandon Skelnar: Oh, it’s heartbreaking. Just reading it gives me chills because they’ve been through so much together. Having the last moment where viewers see them say they love each other for the first time. Finally they spoke it out. And it was heartbreaking that they didn’t hear each other talk. It was cruel. It was very cruel.
even when we were filming I had moments when I was taken off myself as an actor. And then the character that I am, you know, the hair on my arm would go up. And I would say, “Man, this is very heartbreaking and tragic.” Honestly, that’s what Taylor does best.laugh). It’s a brutal way to end it. At least this first part
it is So sad! This ending is not a happy ending at all. It’s just a sinking feeling. From Montana actors to You and Julia, it packs a punch.
Yes, it really does, it really does.
Did you learn about the plot of the finale during this process?
I think we started filming when we knew about the ending. But shortly after we started filming, we got (the script). Overall, everyone was sad about it. Not just our storyline But the whole episode was heavy, it was heavy, and it was a big shift in tone. And I thought if something happened It’s just a setting change that will be part 2 because I think it will be a big change in the tone of the show.

Has the ball started rolling in season 2 production yet?
I know (Taylor Sheridan) is in his phase right now and writing it. I don’t know everyone is guessing I met our director Ben Richardson yesterday for lunch. He and I both came up with different theories and we figured out where to go. And we look forward to where it goes. I’m excited. Can’t wait to read it, hopefully soon.
I think we should start[filming]in late summer.
Do you know when season 2 will come out?
I don’t know when they will take it out. Your guess made me It could be in the same timeline as this season, sooner rather than later.
You filmed in the same location. So the weather plays a big part in this.
Yes. I know we’re trying to avoid the minus 20-degree Montana winter as much as possible.
I want you to rank your favorite Spencer and Alex moments. Whether it’s a romantic moment or a favorite moment in general. Maybe your top five?
Top five? Oh man, not in any particular order. But I want to say that everything about Stanley Hotel in Part 2, the first meeting scene is really beautiful. And I love the feel of those sets. Zanzibar The beach and Zanzibar are a perfect match. Boats, swimming – all wrecks. Their relationship changed at that point and what followed when they got married. which will be on the list as well
The ending of episode 6 was beautiful.laugh). We see them most peacefully. and has its own tone and atmosphere i really love that I loved that time and I loved that.
Imagine that Taylor Sheridan peaceful moment.
Yes, you got it! You got them and you need them. and when they come you are grateful for them As an actor playing a character too, you can feel it, you can feel it when you get that breath. It’s good. That’s four?
That’s four. I have to say that my favorite moment of them all season was the scene where they were at the front of the boat after getting married. It’s a movie and it’s so beautiful, I love it.
That’s really good.

do you have another
I loved the waltzes in episode 8. The waltzes of all, that was my favorite thing about filming the entire movie.
Why
It touched upon Gatsby’s feelings. For Spencer, the visual arc and the character’s internal arc throughout the season. finally realized that he was a man He appeared for her. She was very uncomfortable with Arthur. She had seasickness, and now he was in this space where he could set up a space for her, comfort her, and be a strong and peaceful stone for her in those moments.
He tried to gather himself and show himself for her. And he’s dancing! It’s a very beautiful picture. I remember walking in that scene. And we were all like, “Damn, this is special. This is a special set.”
It’s very beautiful to look at. And your dress in that scene, oh my god
Oh yes. It’s so good.
I think both of you will be able to go to Montana at the end of the season. But I think I’m joking. One season left How do you feel about Julia as your co-star?
oh she’s amazing she is cute We’re very fortunate that we get along so well and are able to have a great working relationship with these characters. And we have fun doing it. I think she killed it. And it was a pleasure to watch her. I am grateful that it works the way it does. Because it doesn’t always happen that way.
Sure, and hopefully we’ll see you do some scenes with Harrison and Helen next season.
I hope so I’m looking forward to
Was all your time together at Cowboy Camp?
Yes, Cowboy Camp and the prep and premiere stages. The time I had with them was amazing. they are the best They are the best people. And they became legends in what I did. So it’s a treat. It’s a real treat.
