The question of who’s the best real-life soccer player in the “Ted Lasso” cast is “a tough one,” at least according to Brett Goldstein, who plays Roy Kent on the show.
“You’ve got (Christo Fernandez) who’s a pro,” Goldstein told POPSUGAR. “You’ve also got Moe Hashim who’s a pro. Phil Dunster is great. They’re all very good.” “Agreed, if you said you could only play one player, I’d go for Moe Hashim, who’s a great all-around player. He is the god of the game.”
There are plenty of options to choose from as all the players on the list really know how to play the sport. “It is very important that every team can play football. So it’s definitely part of their audition process,” Theo Park, the show’s casting director, told IndieWire in 2021. Then they had to perform. Also convey their football skills on tape.”
Still, some players have more experience than others. Including Fernandez. “Back home in Guadalajara, Mexico, where I come from. I didn’t play at the highest level like the first version. But I played professionally in Division 3 and Division 2,” he said in an interview with Screen Times. “That’s what I like. Football has been my passion since I was a child until now.
On the other hand, despite knowing the direction of the game, Dunster wasn’t exactly a pro. Even though he played one of the show’s soccer stars. “I am not a professional footballer. It takes time and a good editor. Luckily we have to look like Jamie Tartt,” he told the AV Club in 2021. “In terms of training, we spent a lot of time training to make sure we were doing it right.”
