Growing up in the shadow of a superstar parent is never easy – but darkness is most of all for Britney Spears’ two sons.
Their father, Kevin Federline, has tried to create a normal life for the teenage boys amid the backdrop of a family tearing himself up with lawsuits and bitter words on social media.
And now, breaking his decade-long silence, the father of 16-year-old Preston and 15-year-old Jaden has revealed that he hasn’t seen Britney for months.
Kevin, 44, said: “The boys have decided they just don’t see her.
“It’s been a few months since they saw her. They decided not to go to the wedding.
“It’s been tough. It’s the most challenging thing I think I’ve ever had to do in my life.”
In an extensive interview, Britney’s ex-husband also revealed:
- He tells the boys that his mother’s provocative Instagram posts are his way of “expressing himself.”
- His belief that Britney’s controversial conservatism “saved” her – but lasted much longer.
- How he got a restraining order against Brittany’s custodial father – but is ready to build bridges with her.-
- He found out in a live radio interview that his marriage to the singer had ended.
After giving up the shackles of her stereotype in November 2021, Britney embarked on a series of major life changes.
A 2008 legal ruling meant that many aspects of her finances and personal life were under the control of her 70-year-old father, Jamie.
In June, Britney, 40, married her partner, Sam Asghari, 28, and bought a massive 10-million-pound mansion from the Federline family home in Los Angeles.
His glittering wedding with the model and personal trainer was attended by celebrities including Madonna and Paris Hilton – but most of the people in the Spears clan did not receive invitations.
Preston and Jaden were on the guest list, but they decided not to go after she lost contact with Brittany several months ago.
Kevin said: “They were happy for her but since they are not seeing her now, they decided not to attend her wedding.”
The decision to stop contact was made by the boys after they became uncomfortable with what they were seeing during their visits, but Kevin would not elaborate.
Their own home is a heaven filled with love.
Talented boys, who are as musical as both their parents, write songs – Jaden can spend up to three hours a day playing the piano.
Kevin wants to make sure he can “talk to me about anything”—including tough topics like his mom’s 13-year stereotype and even his racy and sometimes nude Instagram posts. Also includes discussion about.
Dad-of-six Kevin, who lives with his wife Victoria, 39, their two children, their boys from Brittany and their two eldest from a previous marriage, says he’s posted a stream of photos online of Preston and Jaden was “apologies” by his mother.
In a series of interviews, excerpts of which will air on ITV News this week, she told me: “I try to explain to her, ‘Look, maybe this is just another way she tries to express herself’ .
“But that doesn’t take away from the fact that what it does to them. It’s hard.”
In recent years there has also been a growing curiosity among boys about the protection of their mothers.
When they were little, Kevin explained to them: “Your mom needs help.”
But now they have a more in-depth discussion about why the legal system came into being.
Kevin believes that the 2008 order—given by a court when a man is deemed unable to manage his affairs—”100 percent” initially saved Britney.
At the time of the ruling, Kevin had sole custody of his sons, but as things started to improve, the parents became closer to sharing them 50-50.
Kevin credits Jamie Spears for working with him to create an environment that meant boys could see their moms regularly.
Now Kevin wonders whether Jamie has “overstayed” his control over his daughter’s life and worries about whether his ex-wife’s privacy has been violated.
And while he has a lot of sympathy for Jamie, the pair has their own issues.
In November 2019, Kevin pulled out a restraining order against his former father-in-law following claims of an altercation with one of his sons.
But he would still “welcome” his grandfather into the boys’ lives.
“People make mistakes,” he says. “I think he’s been put through the wrinkling.”
For Jamie, it looks like more turmoil is yet to come.
Brittany’s legal team hopes to grill her under oath over claims of mismanagement of her guardianship, with the potential for further legal action.
And the singer has targeted several family members on social media in recent weeks, including her mother Lynn, 67, sister Jamie Lynn, 31, and brother Brian, 45.
But despite the harsh words and legal matters, Kevin insists that there is much love in the family and that he keeps the door open for the boys to see all of their relatives.
He says: “They all care a lot for each other. Normal families do this, but it is not flaunted on social media and on television.”
Kevin hasn’t spoken to Brittany in years, but he still fondly remembers their “whirlwind” romance.
It was love at first sight when they were introduced by a mutual friend in 2004 at Hollywood nightclub Joseph’s Cafe.
There was an “instant” connection and six months later the pair tied the knot in Los Angeles.
Kevin was an established dancer and a rising musician when Britney, riding on the success of her fourth album, took time off to have her two children.
The contrast in their lives and the media glare saw their relationship unravel.
Kevin was promoting his latest single in Canada in 2006 when “Blind” went live on air while interviewing a radio host who told him that Britney had filed for divorce.
His thoughts immediately went back to the home of his two boys.
“She wanted full custody,” says Kevin. “I knew I had to fight. Kids were everything.”
In Chicago he met lawyer Mark Vincent Kaplan, who told him: “I’m going to take you into custody because I believe in you and I believe in you.”
After a bitter divorce and legal battle over the children, the pair were initially awarded joint custody.
But it was the start of a particularly difficult period for Britney.
And after her public breakup in 2007, a judge awarded full custody to Kevin.
He recalls a night around when Britney with a shaved head, behind dozens of paparazzi, tried to confront him at home.
She saw the camera flash first, and then the pop star began buzzing her gate intercom to try to gain entry into the property.
As Kevin’s mother carried the children upstairs, he and a member of his security team affixed bedsheets to the windows to try to keep their privacy from snappers outside.
His primary concern was for the children – he didn’t want them to see their mother acting that way.
After seeing press coverage of his downward spiral, Kevin was “dead” to the woman he once loved.
Now his only focus is on his children – and he hopes that the boys will eventually be able to have a good relationship with their mother.
But Kevin is serious when he admits: “This whole thing is harder to watch, harder to live, harder to watch my boys than anything else.”

my time at home with the brady bunch
by Daphne Baraki
While filming for this documentary, I got my first glimpse of fatherhood in the eye of the storm.
Being a full-time father of six is challenging at the best of times, but it’s something else in these circumstances.
Kevin Federline stayed out of the limelight for more than a decade in an effort to give his kids a sense of grounding and normalcy.
But when I contacted him, he finally agreed to tell his story.
In fact, he has some lucrative book deals on his desk—something he might not have done while raising young children with wife Victoria.
We had a great time at home with Kevin and all his kids, while filming with senior producer Bill Gunasti.
This includes Britney’s boys Preston and Jaden and their two children from Victoria – Jordan, 11, and eight-year-old Peyton.
Kevin’s eldest kids — 20-year-old Corey and 18-year-old Caleb — also joined us from his relationship with actress Shar Jackson.
Three boys and three girls together make up a perfect blended family. Kevin jokes that they are like the Brady Bunch of TV.
Despite the obvious difficulties, Brittany’s boys are flourishing.
Preston loves drawing and shows genuine artistic promise, while Jaden plays the piano and composes music.
There is no grudge against anyone in this house – at least Brittany.
Kevin feels only forgiveness and love for the entire Spears family.
And more than anything, he hopes that one day they will all be able to communicate like a regular family again.
