Over the weekend, Drew Barrymore said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that her therapist had dumped her for drinking too much alcohol.
Now her therapist is telling his story.
in the statement of Entertainment Weekly, Barrymore’s longtime therapist, Barry Michels, explained Wednesday why he decided to stop treating the actor and TV host following her 2016 divorce. famous, endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow and Adam Mackay
“Sometimes therapists have to withhold treatment until the patient is willing to stop certain chronic self-destructive behaviors that interfere with therapy,” Michels told EW.
“Fortunately, in this case I got in touch with Drew Barrymore who is one of the strongest and toughest people I have ever met… She did the right thing for herself. And we can come back to heal together.”
Michels’ answer is consistent with what Barrymore said earlier about what happened. While talking to The Times’ Amy Kaufman, the “Never been Kissed” star opened up about her deep depression after she and art consultant Will Kopelman, who had been together for four years, split up in 2016.
“(Michelles) just said, ‘I can’t do this anymore,’” recalls Barrymore. “It really was about my drinking. I said, ‘I get it. I have never respected you more. You see that I’m not getting better And I hope that one day I will regain your trust.’”
Barrymore added that after a two-year hiatus, she contacted Michels and told him she had stopped drinking. He agreed to see her again.
“I’m not stuck,” Barrymore said.
