EXCLUSIVE: Ex-footballer Jermaine Pennant signs up for SAS: Who Dares Wins as show’s DS team ready to delve into his troubled past

Former Arsenal and Liverpool player Jermaine Pennant has signed up for the next series of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

The former Big Brother star, 39, enjoyed a 10-year major league career, but his on-field success was overshadowed by off-field issues, particularly when he became the first major league star to play with an electronic tag.

Jermaine will begin filming for the Channel 4 show in the coming weeks, joining cast members including TOWIE’s James Argent, former Coronation Street actor Ryan Thomas, Wanted singer Siva Kaneswaran and Hollyoaks favorite Kirsty Lee-Porter.

A TV insider said: “Jermaine is looking forward to competing in the grueling show, fitness wise he knows it will be tough but he is used to rigorous training sessions.

“His backstory is fascinating because of his tough upbringing, which is why show bosses wanted him involved as DS would have something to drive him to.

“In recent years his views on life have completely changed, his days of partying and drinking are over and he hopes to prove that he is a different person.”

In 2018, Jermaine hit the headlines when he took part in his then-wife Alice Goodwin’s explicit online sex shows, where she charged viewers £6 a minute to watch the explicit content.

He’s also no stranger to reality TV, appearing on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018 and Celebs Go Dating the following year.

Jermaine is now in a relationship with glamor model Jess Impiazzi, who he recently described as “the perfect girl for me”.

Speaking in June during an interview with GB News, he said: “We just got along and had a similar upbringing as well.

“She’s had a hard time and we just, you know, kind of bond and see eye to eye and things and we’re both happy.”

Jermaine was once the most expensive teenager in football history when he joined Arsenal from Notts County for £2m in 1999.

He was just 15 when he moved and made 12 appearances for the Gunners before signing for Birmingham City in 2005, where he played with an electronic tag after a drink-driving conviction.

The following year he secured a £6.7m move to Liverpool, where he played in the 2007 Champions League final while earning £30,000 a week.

But after three years at Anfield, his football career began to unravel following loan spells at Portsmouth, Stoke City and Wolves, a brief stint at La Liga side Real Zaragoza, before ending his career playing in India and Singapore.

His last club was Billericay Town where he made just 13 appearances.
