Tom Cruise’s Interview With Matt Lauer On The Today Show Takes A Turn Over Brooke Shields’ Drug
Tom Cruise has made it known that he does not subscribe to psychiatry, nor does he believe in medication as a cure for battling depression.
Cruise revealed at the time, “I never agreed with psychiatry, ever. Before I was a Scientologist, I never agreed with psychiatry, and then when I started studying the history of psychiatry, I began to realize more and more that ‘why didn’t I do it’ I don’t agree with psychiatry.”
“When someone says[the drug]helped them, let’s face it; it didn’t cure anything. There’s no science. There’s nothing that could cure them. I care about Brooke Shields because I think she’s an incredibly talented woman, (but) look at where her career has gone.
Cruise was challenged by Lauer after making the statement, apparently causing further tension between the two. Brooke Shields released a statement of her own regarding the matter.
“While Mr. Cruz says that Mr. Lauer and I ‘don’t understand the history of psychiatry,’ I’m going to take a wild guess and say that Mr. Cruz has never suffered from postpartum depression,” she revealed.
“The comments made by Tom Cruise are a disservice to mothers everywhere. To suggest that I was wrong in taking drugs to deal with my depression and instead should have been taking vitamins and exercising shows a lack of understanding about postpartum depression and childbirth in general.
At the time, Katie Holmes remained silent on the interview. However, after their split, Lauer brought up the matter and here’s how she reacted to it.
Matt Lauer Brought Up The Interview With Tom Cruise, But Katie Holmes Was Able To Side Step The Question
Katie Holmes’ movie at that time, touched by fire, dealt with a similar topic that Lauer and Cruz had debated years earlier. Therefore, Lauer could not miss the opportunity to make a comparison.
“[The film]asks the question, is it beneficial to treat these people with drugs?” Loire founded. “You and I both remember the heated discussion we had on that subject here in this studio. How do you think the film approaches that?”
Holmes didn’t delve into the question and had a precise answer, placing the emphasis elsewhere on both the director, and how the film was trying to tell a love story as well.
“I think our director (Paul Dalio) did an amazing job is this movie is just kind of a show, it is,” she said. “There are these two characters in a love story, which is what he’s saying that it’s kind of crazy to fall in love. But he questions the audience to make their own decision.”
Holmes was commended for the way she handled the question, going about it with pure class.
Tom Cruise Went To Brooke Shields’ House And Apologized Personally For That Moment
As for the saga between Cruise and Shields, it was resolved on a positive note. According to Brooke, Cruz showed up at her door, and made a genuine and heartfelt apology.
Shields recalls, “He came over to my house, and he apologized to me from the bottom of his heart, and he apologized for bringing me into the whole thing and for everything that happened,” she said.
“And through it all, I was so struck by how heartfelt it was. And at no point did I feel like I had to defend myself, nor did I feel like she was blaming me for anything other than the fact that Was trying to explain something else. He was deeply sorry. And I accepted it.
For Cruz and Lauer, they too were able to overcome the situation, while Lauer used the negative as a lesson.
“If you have a bad experience on air, you don’t feel you’ve done your job or you’ve had an embarrassing moment. I guarantee you’ll work harder to make sure it doesn’t happen again next time.
At least, everyone moved ahead of the situation.
