such as american football Preparing to write their fourth album, the pandemic virtualized the band’s writing. And it didn’t work for the band. The unique style is born from one-on-one collaboration. Especially guitarist Steve Holmes, drummer and trumpet player Steve Lamos, the latter of whom left the band in 2021. But for Mike and his cousin Nate Kinsella. Virtual collaboration is something they’ve been doing since before the pandemic. And they also started experimenting with things like synthesizers and electronic drums. And it comes with music that exists outside of the usual American football wheelhouse. So they were formed. liewhich is scheduled to release the album this Friday (3/31), via Polyvinyl finds them reliant on influences such as Depeche Mode, The Cure, Peter Gabriel, Robyn and Majical Cloudz, influences that are always there but Owen or American. Football is covered with funny guitar riffs or quirky time signatures. With LIES, Mike and Nate embrace the new wave moves that their ’80s heroes would have created. But despite its synthesized exterior, the LIES sounded unmistakably like Mike Kinsella’s work. His singing and songwriting style is still unique. Although he deliberately pays homage to other artists, and LIES is an album that fits Kinsella’s principles.
LIES also has an upcoming performance in April, including Brooklyn’s Baby’s All Right on April 28 (all dates below), and American Football has an upcoming performance this year too. There’s also Steve Lamos back in the band.
I met Mike and Nate on the latest episode of the podcast. BrooklynVegan And they talked a lot about the LIES album, their plans for translating these songs live, what American Football and Owen are doing, and so on. As kids at family parties they both like punk and alternative rock. The chemistry the duo discovered on the 2003 Joan of Arc tour, that time Nate fell asleep at the Owen Show, that time Mike roasted himself at his 40th birthday party, and so on.
