Nia and Chris had a brief romance when they were both coming to Hollywood. However, after their first meeting, things don’t go exactly as planned, according to Nia. “We went on a date and after we hung out and then he took me back to Brooklyn and I was like, ‘Okay, so I guess that’s the part where you exchange numbers,'” she explained to The Wendy Williams Show. “Make a long story short and a week goes by and I haven’t heard from him, he gave me his number and I gave him mine and I’m like, ‘God, he didn’t call me.’ And I end up calling him and dialing his number, and this…person gave me the wrong number!” Kris hilariously admitted it on the show, saying she was “obnoxious” when they met. The couple is obviously laughing about it now.
Another comedian named Chris also gave Nia quite the dating anecdote. In 1995, the couple filmed the classic comedy Friday when they became interested in each other. As Nia describes it, she had more work in Hollywood than Chris at the time, so she could afford a BMW, something she rubbed off on Chris a bit while he got his hilarious payoff.
“At the time, it seemed like a big buy. I bought a BMW. It was so sweet,” she began telling the story of AV/TVClubper ILoveOldSchoolMusic.com. “I was shooting Friday at that time Chris Tucker and I also saw each other on the freeway on our way to the set. He had a broken window with a pizza box on it because he couldn’t afford to fix the window! We get to work and he says, “When I grow up, I want to be just like you.”
Despite this, Chris became a major blockbuster star (see Rush hour franchise with Jackie Chan) and things were soon reversed. “Cut to…all the money you made,” Nia continued. “Two years ago we went out to dinner and he took me with — ready? — a Phantom Rolls-Royce that — I couldn’t even figure out how to open the damn car door. I said to him, “Oh, do you want to be like me? I think things have turned around.’
Nia met the actor Masai Dorsey on the set of her NBC crime drama Third watchwhich lasted from 1999 to 2005. The two began dating and welcomed a son Masai Dorsey II on November 26, 2000. The new parents were engaged at one point, but eventually split shortly after the birth.
In 2010, Nia revealed that she was dating former basketball star Ime. Two years later, the couple got a huge surprise: they were pregnant! Nia, then 40, discovered she was pregnant during a routine doctor’s visit! When they welcomed you Kez Sunday Udoka in November 2010, the couple shared the news with the world. “Words cannot explain how excited we are about the new addition to our family,” Nia and Ime said in the statement. “We feel truly blessed and appreciate all the well wishes and prayers.”
In 2015, the couple got engaged. Still, after he popped the question, Nia seemed to have doubts about walking down the aisle. “I understand the religious aspect of marriage. It is beautiful, fantastic and dreamy and it is every girl’s fantasy to have this moment. But I don’t know if I need that to feel like I’m in a partnership that works,” she said in Yes girl podcast in December 2020. The couple has not yet married.
