Queen’s funeral: Peter Overton returns to Sydney after Liz Truss ‘minor royal’ gaffe

Nine News anchor Peter Overton returned to Sydney on Thursday after anchoring the network’s extensive coverage of Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.

The veteran journalist, 56, looked happy to be back on home soil as he strolled around the international arrivals terminal.

Stepping off his long flight from London, Peter donned a black shirt and hat, as well as a shiny gold watch.

His suitcase, covered in old 60 Minutes and Nine Network travel stickers, looked a little worse for wear as he pushed it on a luggage trolley.

Peter and outgoing A Current Affairs host Tracy Grimshaw co-anchored the network’s coverage of Her Majesty’s funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday.

But the pair were mocked around the world after they failed to identify the new British Prime Minister, Liz Truss, while commenting on the service.

American comedian Stephen Colbert mentioned the gaffe on The Late Show this week.

Colbert said it was clear “Australian TV didn’t get the memo” about who the new prime minister was, before asking: “How’s your new job Liz?”

“She’s the leader of Britain and nobody recognizes her,” he laughed.

The British leader got out of his car to attend Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, but Peter and Tracey were left scratching their heads over who she was.

“So now we’re told it’s a substantial motorcade,” Peter said.

“Come with us while we try to identify who’s getting out of the car.” Of course, this is under police escort. I guess that could be royalty, Tracy.

“Difficult to identify. Perhaps minor royals, members of the… I can’t identify them at this stage…”

Viewers at home took to social media to call them out for the blunder.

“Good job Peter Overton. I didn’t know the new PM,” one person tweeted.

Another wrote: “Just happened to be walking past the living room in my house where my family are watching the Queen’s funeral.

“Tracey Grimshaw: “And we’re not sure who it is that has arrived. Unfortunately, we cannot identify all of them. They look like local dignitaries.” It was Liz Truss. I roared!”

Peter later tweeted: “We relied on a video feed to live stream the arrivals. Sometimes the video would freeze so we'd turn around to try and catch a glimpse. I know what British Prime Minister Liz Truss looks like. The back of her hat, not so much!

Moments after the blunder, Peter Overton made a correction.

“I was told that in the distance was Liz Truss, the new Prime Minister, she could see her jumping out of the car. Thank you very much for this information,” he told viewers.

He then admitted to Nine co-stars Karl Stefanovic, Ali Langdon and British royal expert Dickie Arbiter that their British guest was perhaps better at spotting local celebrities.

“Carl and Allie and Dickie, especially Dickie, I think you’ll notice these faces and recognize them better than we do,” he said.
