The Taylor Swift Ticketmaster Controversy
When tickets for the Eras Tour went on sale, there was unprecedented demand. Before the release date, fans can sign up for a code. This is Ticketmaster’s attempt to weed out bots from purchasing tickets. The lottery-style draw is completed by giving presale codes only to a select number of fans to purchase tickets.
Even with hundreds of thousands of fans no The code was received and it was on the “waiting list.” Ticketmaster still crashed when hordes of Swifties flocked to the site on November 15 ahead of the sale. Millions of people are simultaneously trying to enter the sales system. The president of Live Nation later revealed that 14 million fans immediately attempted to sign in, although Ticketmaster was only expecting 1.5 million based on the code they received.
Ticketmaster was forced to cancel regular sales for concerts. Due to the low number of tickets, thousands of fans were unable to purchase tickets. This led to outrage and opposition to Ticketmaster. On November 18, Taylor took to her Instagram Story to address the situation. She called Ticketmaster specifically for failing to address the demands of the situation. Even if she insists on protection.
“Not to say I’m extremely protective of my fans,” Taylor wrote. “We’ve been doing this for decades together. and over the years I have brought many elements of my career into my home. I do this specifically to improve the quality of the fan experience by doing it myself with my team who care about their fans as much as me. It’s hard for me to trust an outside agency with these relationships and loyalty. And it’s excruciating for me to watch mistakes happen without help. There are many reasons why people have difficulty trying to get tickets. And I’m trying to figure out how this situation can improve in the future. I’m not going to make excuses for anyone because we asked them several times if they could handle this type of demand and we were sure they could. It’s amazing that 2.4 million people got tickets. But I feel really bad. that many of them felt they had to go through multiple bear attacks to get it. And for those who didn’t get a ticket All I can say is that my hope is to provide more opportunities for all of us to get together and sing these songs. Thank you for wanting to be there. You don’t know how much it means.”
On the same day, Ticketmaster apologized for the failure in a statement on its website. The company specifically apologized to Taylor and her fans while trying to explain how things got out of control. Ticket sales experts include statistics to show how many people come to the site to buy tickets. “In the past, about 40% (verified) of fans (with pre-sale codes) actually showed up, and most of them bought an average of 3 tickets. Bai,” the post explains, “approximately 1.5 million people (out of the 3.5 million registered) were sent codes to participate in the sale for all 52 days.”
The post goes on to say, “This time, the excessive number of bot attacks, including fans without code, has made the traffic to our site unprecedented. resulting in a total of 3.5 billion system requests.” The company also reassured fans that they are “always working to improve the ticketing experience.”
In January 2023, Ticketmaster/Live Nation faced a Senate hearing on whether a monopoly in the ticketing industry was the cause of the controversy. During the hearing, Live Nation’s CEO once again apologized to Taylor and her fans. “We have to do better and will do better,” he insisted. related newsTicketmaster’s senior Senate was roasted by the Senate during the hearing, and several senators even pulled out Taylor Swift’s lyrics to make their point. It remains to be seen if this trial will affect the company or not in the future.
