(Warning: below contains major spoilers for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Season 5, Episode 9 “Four Minutes.”)
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel The show may have started in the 1950s, but the story took viewers to 2005 for the show’s final moments, as Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) and Susie (Alex Borstein) bid farewell to viewers.
After teasing a rift between the pair earlier in the season, viewers learned that their falling out stemmed from Susie’s ties to the mob and ultimately led to Joel’s (Michael Zegen) imprisonment. Years later, Midge sends Susie a message during her roast where the manager asks for Midge’s number.

While we never see their reconciliation onscreen, a flash forward to 2005 sees the old friends once again, joking on the phone and watching the latest episodes. Jeopardy! together, which appears to be a routine between them depending on the context. as logic behind Jeopardy! And the scene itself, says Brosnahan, “only Amy (Sherman-Palladino) knows the answer to that.”
To use the fan-favorite game show, the actress says, “I know it was a real difficult task to get this right. They didn’t really know if we could until maybe the day before.
Borstein had little more context for the arrangement between Midge and Susie, likely focusing on the inspiration behind “the friendship of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. throughout their working lives and long after making films together”. They have been friends and used to see everyday Jeopardy! Together.”
“I think she borrowed that[storyline]from there,” Borstein added of Sherman-Palladino’s inspiration behind Susie and Midge’s over-the-phone viewing sessions. Brosnahan confirmed, “I think you’re right.”
It may have something to do with the age demographic of Susie and Midge at this point within the series, too, says Borstein. Jeopardy! He was what “they are looking for at that time of night.”
Despite the separation, the final scene re-establishes the friendship viewers have come to love over the years, assuring them that no matter what happens, this is a happy ending for this dynamic duo. but what did you think The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ending?
