Superstar Barbie Bassett has come to light recently after being fired by WLBT for offending people by using Snoop Dog’s lyrics as a joke.
People are outraged by the conversation between Barbie and co-anchor Wilson. Stribling earlier this month, while Stribling joked that Barbie had “Snoop’s dog tattoo on her shoulder,” Bassett nonchalantly replied with a “Fo shizzle” comment that got her in trouble.
Although Bassett may have recently quoted the lyrics of Snoop’s song, she did not consider how racially inappropriate the comment was. Bassett referenced a phrase that Snoop Dog often uses, but the term is an alternative to the n-word.
What fuels public opinion:
It was later discovered that this wasn’t the first time that Barbie had suffered racism. Basset was caught using the word “grandmother” in October 2022, which is also an old slave term.
Bassett then went ahead and apologized for her comments. and admit that she “Rude and insensitive” to say so. She also admitted that she had to do better, saying:
“I will learn from this and attend training. To give me a better understanding of our history and people. I can’t fix the pain of my comment. I pray that you will forgive me and ask for grace through this awful mistake.”
After a series of controversial incidents involving Barbie Bassett, the public outrage was justified. Because it seems more like a convention than a bona fide mistake.
There was no official statement from the station.
WLBT hasn’t broken the silence on the matter. “As I’m sure you understand, WLBT cannot comment on personnel,” vice president Ted Fortenberry admitted.
There is no official confirmation as to whether this incident led to Barbie Bassett’s firing.
People sided with Bassett.
Radio host Charlamagne Thagod sided with Barbie on his talk show. defended her and said, “Come on, we have to stop. Man, that’s no reason to fire that woman,” and added, “She probably has no idea (it) is a derivative of the N-word.”
Another Twitter user asked, “Is it really that serious?”
