The Maryland Court of Appeals upheld Adnan Syed’s verdict Tuesday in the 1999 murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, whose death was mentioned on the popular podcast “Serial” Adnan Syed. More than 20 years in prison for crimes
Adnan Masud Syed Lee’s ex-girlfriend was found guilty of first-degree murder. And received life imprisonment plus 30 years. Last year, Adnan Syed was released after DNA analysis confirmed his innocence. Prosecutors file a new appeal that Hae Min Lee’s family has been ignored throughout the investigation.
This is the core of the story:
After reviewing the case Prosecutors concluded in September 2022 that new information had been discovered that cast doubt on Syed’s conviction and named two other suspects.
The state’s acquittal petition was scheduled to go to the lower court for a later hearing. Hae Min’s brother, Young Lee, was unable to go to court in person on short notice.
Mr Lee asked the judge to postpone the hearing by a week so he could attend the hearing in person. but the judge refused So he had to use a zoom program.
It was determined that a statute in Maryland that gave victims the right to advance trial notice had been broken.
What is the new state of hearing?
When prosecutors concluded that their case was flawed from the start, The defense also claimed in court that the relatives of the victims were treated like “Afterthoughts,” and the Court of Appeals agreed.
The court ruled that in accordance with a constitutional mandate that victims be treated with dignity and respect in allowing eligible victims to attend court proceedings in person. provided that the victim requests it and everyone involved in Hearing also appears in people.
The court added that the new trial should be conducted more openly. Demand proof if a petition for removal from office is filed. and include reasons for the court’s decision
But the order will not take effect for another 60 days.
